For Ken Ludwig’s Baskerville produced at McCarter Theatre, there was a requirement for “a telescope that shot out of the floor and was caught midair”. The brass telescope was quite heavy, creating an additional challenge of actor safety. This effect was accomplished by created a latex tubing powered cannon that had both high potential energy and a short throw. Initially for McCarter’s production, it was hand operated by a technician under the deck, but was later modified to be pneumatically actuated using toggle clamps that had been modified into a release mechanism.
