Smart Car
Turning Off the Morning News
Beowulf Boritt’s design for Turning off the Morning News at McCarter Theatre called for a small yellow convertible that could fit 5 people, be driven onstage for the scene, and then driven off. Starting with a scrap shell of a Smart Fortwo EV, and with scavenged parts located online, I was able to fabricate something to fit those specifications. The underbody frame with zero-throw casters could be moved by a winch under the show deck, while the 12v wheel motor speed was controlled by the same wireless DMX communication used to power the headlights and brake lights. The rotational force of the tires was halted with regenerative braking. A major challenge working on this project (besides fitting everything in a small vehicle) was working with the unique manufacturing techniques of the donor car involving metal, plastics, and adhesives.
